Bapatla: District Superintendent of Police B Umamaheswar returned 251 lost and stolen mobile phones to their owners at an event held at district police headquarters in Bapatla on Monday.
Speaking at the event, Umamaheswar informed that the police have recovered 1,572 mobile phones in seven rounds so far. The total value of all recovered phones is about Rs 3.14 crore. In the seventh round on Monday, police returned phones worth Rs 50.20 lakh.
He said the district has a special team of technically trained police officers working to trace lost phones. This team works with police in other districts and states to recover phones. So far, 72 percent of reported lost phones have been recovered.
The goal of Bapatla district police is to return every lost phone to its owner, he assured. Umamaheswar urged people not to buy second-hand mobile phones from unknown persons without proper bills.
Buying or selling stolen phones is a criminal offence, he warned. He also asked mobile shop owners to check bills and identity cards before unlocking phones or buying used ones. He urged people, who find a phone, to hand it over to the nearest police station.
He advised those, who lose their phones, to register on the CEIR portal or file a complaint at the nearest police station.
