East Godavari District Administration Steps Up Comprehensive Preparations for Local Body Elections Under Collector Kirti Chekuri

Rajamahendravaram: The East Godavari district administration is making all necessary arrangements for the conduct of local body elections, District Collector and Election Officer Kirti Chekuri said on Thursday. She participated in a video conference conducted by State Election Commissioner Anil Chandra Punetha with district Collectors to review preparations for rural and urban local body elections.
The Collector briefed the Commission on the arrangements being made in the district. According to Kirti Chekuri, elections are to be held in 342 gram panchayats spread across 21 mandals in the district. She said 10 gram panchayats, including nine from Rajamahendravaram Rural mandal and one from Kadiyam mandal, had been merged with the Rajamahendravaram Municipal Corporation under Act 5.
The district has 4,040 wards with a total of 13,43,601 voters. The electorate comprises 6,57,950 men, 6,85,603 women and 48 voters from other categories. As per the final electoral roll published on September 7, there are 12,208 ST voters, 2,79,034 SC voters, 5,32,385 BC voters and 5,19,974 OC voters.
The administration has identified 4,398 polling stations at 1,479 locations across the district. Of these, 2,556 have been classified as normal, 926 as sensitive and 916 as highly sensitive polling stations. Pink ballot papers will be used for the election of sarpanches and white ballot papers for ward member elections. Steps have been taken to print around 32.40 lakh ballot papers, while 6,390 ballot boxes will be required for the elections.
Tenders for procurement of material required at polling and counting centres will be issued between October 7 and 12, the Collector said. Proposals have been prepared to conduct the gram panchayat elections in two or three phases. The administration has identified 4,812 presiding officers, 4,812 assistant presiding officers, 7,710 polling personnel and 2,149 micro observers.
Training is being given to personnel assigned election duties. A draft proposal for delimitation of wards in the Rajamahendravaram Municipal Corporation has also been published, she said. The processes relating to ward delimitation, electoral rolls and polling stations have been completed in the three municipalities in the district.
Mandapeta municipality has 36 wards, 49,059 voters and 72 polling stations. Nidadavole has 32 wards, 35,086 voters and 49 polling stations, while Kovvur has 28 wards, 34,452 voters and 52 polling stations.
Superintendent of Police D Narasimha Kishore suggested that the MPTC and ZPTC elections should also be conducted in two phases to facilitate better management of security and polling arrangements. Joint collector Y Megha Swaroop and Additional SP Devaraj Patil participated in the video conference.
