Vijayawada: NTR district Collector Dr G Lakshmisha said that the district is set to receive a major green cover boost with two lakh seed balls being prepared for distribution across suitable hill, forest and barren areas.
He participated in a seed-ball programme organised by One Earth–One Life at the district Collectorate premises in Vijayawada on Monday. As part of the organisation’s initiatives to promote greenery, conserve biodiversity and maintain ecological balance, students and volunteers prepared and handed over two lakh seed balls to the district administration.
Speaking on the occasion, Dr Lakshmisha said seed balls could support natural regeneration and help increase green cover. He appreciated One Earth–One Life for involving students, women and youth in environmental protection activities. He called for greater public awareness on pollution control, reducing plastic use, cleanliness, recycling, waste segregation and conservation of indigenous seeds. He stressed the need to educate children from an early age about micro-gardening, plant cultivation, seed conservation and environmental protection.
One Earth–One Life founder Eluri Leela Kumari said the organisation was promoting rooftop gardens, home composting and environmental awareness among households. She said a medicinal plant garden, ‘Dhanvanthari Vanam’, had also been developed at the NTR district Collectorate.
Further, she said around two lakh seed balls will be dispersed through drones in suitable locations to facilitate natural germination across the district.
