Guntur: Union Minister of State for Rural Development Dr Pemmasani Chandrasekhar said that 1.2 lakh saplings would be planted across Guntur Parliament constituency with the cooperation of urban local bodies, ZP and Gram Panchayats and take support of corporate companies under Corporate Social Responsibility.
Along with Rajya Sabha Member Bhashyam Rama Krishna, district Collector and GMC Special Officer CM Sai Kanth Varma, GMC Commissioner K Mayur Ashok, MLAs Md Naseer Ahmed and B Ramanjaneyulu, he launched ‘Green Guntur-Nava Guntur’ programme at Shilparamam in Guntur city on Saturday.
Speaking on this occasion, the Union Minister stressed the need to increase Guntur city’s green cover, which is now 7.2%. Stating that the aim of ‘Green Guntur -Nava Guntur’ is to develop Guntur into a Viksit Bharat Model City, he said they will set up 90,000 tree guards to save the planted saplings, which will be geotagged and monitored through a mobile app.
He announced the launch of Mission Zero Plastic under which penalties would be imposed from August 15, on those, who use single use of plastic. He informed that they will launch Rs 500 crore drinking water project designed to meet drinking water needs of Guntur city for the next 30 years very soon, expressing confidence that within the next 30 years, Guntur will emerge as a model city.
Commissioner K Mayur Ashok said the GMC aims to achieve 80% to 90% survival of the planted saplings through avenue plantations.
