Rockfall on Indrakeeladri ghat road prompts safety review

Vijayawada: Endowments Commissioner K Ramachandra Mohan on Saturday inspected the stretch of Indrakeeladri Ghat Road where rocks fell following heavy rains and directed officials to take immediate and permanent safety measures to prevent a recurrence of such incidents.
Accompanied by temple Executive Officer (EO) VK Seena Naik, NIRM scientist Jain, Endowments Department Technical Adviser Subbarao and Chief Engineer Sekhar, the Commissioner inspected the affected stretch, retaining walls and vulnerable portions of the hill slope.
He said the safety of devotees would be accorded the highest priority in view of the forthcoming Dasara Sarannavaratri festivities. He directed officials to take up all necessary protective works on a war footing and ensure that the ghat road was made safe before the Dasara celebrations.
A detailed review was conducted at the site based on the technical report prepared by scientists from Bengaluru-based National Institute of Rock Mechanics (NIRM), following its earlier study on the stability of Indrakeeladri hill. Commissioner Ramachandra discussed the proposed safety measures with the NIRM scientist and engineering officials.
The team examined measures including the scientific removal of loose rocks weakened by rainwater seepage, rock bolting and shotcreting to strengthen vulnerable portions of the hill slope.
The existing high-tensile rockfall netting installed to prevent falling rocks from reaching the ghat road was also inspected.
Officials were directed to install additional protective nets at vulnerable locations wherever necessary.
The Commissioner further instructed authorities to implement NIRM recommendations for constructing dedicated drainage channels to safely divert rainwater down the hill and prevent seepage into the rock mass, which could increase pressure on vulnerable slopes.
He directed the engineering and temple authorities to coordinate closely and complete all technical and safety measures before the Dasara festivities.
