Vijayawada Rural emerges state’s largest mandal in MPTC segments
Vijayawada: Vijayawada Rural Mandal Parishad has emerged as a crucial political battleground in the state, with 40 Mandal Parishad Territorial Constituency (MPTC) segments, making it the largest mandal in the state in terms of the number of MPTC segments.
The mandal has a total of 1,46,580 voters, a strength comparable to that of a small Assembly constituency such as Pedana, which has around 1.60 lakh voters. The mandal assumes added political significance as it extends across Gannavaram Assembly constituency in Krishna district and Mylavaram Assembly constituency in NTR district.
The Vijayawada Rural Mandal Parishad president (MPP) post and the Zilla Parishad Territorial Constituency (ZPTC) seat have both been reserved for the unreserved category, making the contest for these positions particularly keen.
Reservations for all 40 MPTC segments have been finalised, with 20 seats earmarked for women. Of the total, 12 seats have been allotted to Backward Classes (BCs), seven to Scheduled Castes (SCs) and one to Scheduled Tribes (STs), while 20 seats fall under the unreserved category.
Women have been allotted six of the 12 BC-reserved seats and four of the seven SC-reserved seats. In the unreserved category, 10 of the 20 seats have been reserved for women. The fourth MPTC segment in Nunna has been allotted to the ST category.
The reservation pattern has triggered interest among political aspirants across the mandal, with prospective candidates assessing their chances in the respective segments. Given the large electorate, the number of MPTC segments and the mandal’s spread across two Assembly constituencies in separate districts, Vijayawada Rural is expected to draw considerable attention during the forthcoming local body elections.
