Visakhapatnam: As the nomination process for the Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation (GVMC) mayoral election draws to a close, the political battle between the ruling Telugu Desam Party (TDP) and the Opposition YSR Congress Party (YSRCP) is set to intensify.
The contest between TDP candidate Mukka Sravani and YSRCP candidate Varudhu Kalyani is emerging as a crucial test of the political strength of both the parties in Visakhapatnam. An analysis of the candidates’ strengths, party influence and prevailing political equations suggests that the ruling coalition could have an advantage. However, the final outcome depends on several factors, including the candidates’ individual popularity, coordination among alliance partners and the Opposition’s ability to consolidate its support.
Apparently, Visakhapatnam has traditionally been a strong political base for the TDP. Even when the YSRCP swept Andhra Pradesh in the 2019 Assembly elections, winning 151 seats, Visakhapatnam city presented a contrasting picture. TDP candidates emerged victorious in the East, West, North and South Assembly constituencies, underlining the party’s considerable influence in the city.
Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu repeatedly referred to Visakhapatnam’s electoral support for the TDP in his public speeches, highlighting the city’s importance to the party and its political relationship with the people.
The 2021 GVMC elections, however, demonstrated that the city’s political landscape is more complex than Assembly election results alone might suggest. Although the YSRCP secured the Mayor’s post, with Golagani Hari Venkata Kumari assuming office, opposition parties, including the TDP, Jana Sena Party and BJP, also made their presence felt in the corporation.
Following political developments further altered the equation within the civic body. A number of YSRCP corporators shifted their allegiance to the ruling coalition, weakening the Opposition’s position in the corporation and contributing to the political moves against the YSRCP Mayor.
The 2024 Assembly elections apparently strengthened the TDP-led coalition’s position across North Andhra. With the ruling alliance holding the Assembly constituencies covering the GVMC area, its leaders and elected representatives are expected to mobilise their organisational strength to secure victory in the Mayoral contest.
Nevertheless, differences among coalition partners over ward-level seat allocation could pose challenges. Discontent among party workers and the presence of rebel candidates may complicate the alliance’s electoral calculations in certain wards. At the same time, effective coordination among the three alliance partners in other areas could help consolidate their support and improve the prospects of the coalition-backed mayoral candidate.
For the YSRCP, the mayoral election represents an opportunity to demonstrate that it continues to command a substantial support base despite its defeat in the 2024 Assembly elections. The opposition party has been raising public issues and seeking to strengthen its political presence across the region.
The party is banking on the leadership of YSRCP Visakhapatnam president K.K. Raju and MLC Varudhu Kalyani, both of whom have established political profiles in North Andhra. By projecting Kalyani as its Mayoral candidate, the YSRCP hopes to consolidate its support base, highlight its record in the corporation and mount a strong challenge to the ruling coalition.
The party is also expected to highlight development initiatives undertaken during its tenure in the GVMC, seeking to convince voters that its previous administration delivered results at the grassroots level. Whether this campaign translates into electoral gains will depend on its ability to communicate those achievements effectively and counter the ruling coalition’s organisational edge.
Eventually, the Mayoral contest is about more than the political fortunes of two candidates. It is a test of the TDP-led coalition’s ability to convert its Assembly election success into control over the city’s civic administration, as well as the YSRCP’s capacity to stage a comeback in an urban centre that has been favouring the TDP.
While the ruling coalition appears to have an advantage on paper, internal differences, rebel candidates and local political equations could also influence the outcome.
Equally important will be the personal appeal of the candidates, their rapport with corporators and their ability to secure support across party lines. In a contest shaped by competing political narratives and shifting loyalties, the candidates’ individual strengths play an imperative role in the poll battle. On Sunday, ward members filed their nominations after taking out a rally.
