Visakhapatnam: Visakhapatnam east constituency MLA Velagapudi Ramakrishna Babu called upon people to consider cleanliness a social responsibility and actively participate in making the ‘Swachhata Hi Seva–2026’ campaign a grand success.

At the campaign launch held on Thursday at Jagannadharaju Nagar (JR Nagar), under the chairmanship of GVMC Additional Commissioner Palli Nallanayya and the supervision of East Zonal Commissioner K Sivaprasad, the MLA encouraged that cleanliness is not the responsibility of government agencies and sanitation workers alone but can be achieved through effective public participation.

The MLA urged people to keep their homes and surroundings clean, refrain from dumping waste indiscriminately and act responsibly. He called upon Resident Welfare Associations (RWAs) to play an active role in cleanliness initiatives.

Referring to the water conservation initiatives at JR Nagar, the MLA observed that residents had established rainwater harvesting pits at their residences because these pits enable rainwater to recharge the groundwater and help the locality effectively cope with the prevailing water scarcity conditions.

He urged residents of other colonies to follow the JR Nagar model and establish rainwater harvesting pits at their homes to conserve every possible drop of rainwater.

Launched following the directions of GVMC Commissioner Ketan Garg, the campaign will continue until October 17. GVMC Additional Commissioner Palli Nallanayya said that ‘Swachhata Hi Seva–2026’ activities would be conducted across the GVMC limits for a month and explained that the campaign would focus on five key areas: identifying and transforming cleanliness target units (CTUs) into clean and attractive public spaces, creating awareness among students and youth through ‘Swachh Pathshala–Yuva for Swachhata’, giving priority to the health, safety and dignity of sanitation workers through ‘SafaiMitra Suraksha Evam Samman Shivir’, strengthening public participation through ‘Jan Bhagidari for Swachhata’ and promoting reduce–reuse–recycle (RRR) and encouraging people to avoid single-use plastic supplies and reusing of waste under ‘Swachhata Se Samriddhi’.
