Visakhapatnam: Andhra Intellectual Forum founder-president Chalasani Srinivas demanded the immediate removal of Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Gyanesh Kumar. He alleged that the Election Commission of India is not functioning independently and accused the CEC of acting in favour of the BJP-led Central government.
Addressing a hunger strike organised by the Andhra Intellectual Forum, CPI, CPM, Congress parties and INTUC near the Mahatma Gandhi statue in Visakhapatnam on Saturday, Srinivas mentioned that elections are the foundation of Indian democracy and that the Election Commission has a crucial constitutional responsibility to ensure free, fair and transparent polls.
He said voters have the democratic right to decide who should govern the country through their votes. The Election Commission, he stressed, must uphold the integrity of the electoral process and ensure that the people’s mandate is respected. Srinivas expressed concern over what he described as growing public doubts about the Election Commission’s credibility.
He called for measures to strengthen public confidence in the electoral process.
Demanding Gyanesh Kumar’s immediate removal from the post, he alleged that the Chief Election Commissioner is acting as an agent of the BJP-led Central government.
Several political and trade union leaders participated in the protest, including CPI state Secretariat member JV Satyanarayana Murthy, CPM district secretary M Jaggunaidu, CPI-MLND leader M Lakshmi, AAP leader P Ramu, Shramika Sangh leader B Yagnanarayana, ML Prajaporu leader Deva and Congress leader S Sudhakar.
Representatives of AITUC, CITU and other trade unions also took part in the hunger strike, demanding accountability and greater public confidence in the country’s electoral system.
