Visakhapatnam: Keeping Diwali season in view, South Coast Railway (SCoR) stepped up security measures across its network to prevent transportation of firecrackers, explosives and other inflammable materials in passenger trains. Appealing to passengers to prioritise safety during festive rush, railway authorities warned that carrying such hazardous items is a punishable offence.
In a special safety appeal, SCoR urged passengers not to carry firecrackers or other dangerous substances while travelling by train and requested them not to allow fellow passengers to carry such materials. Railway officials emphasised that even a small quantity of inflammable substances could pose a serious threat to hundreds of passengers and railway property.
Under Railways Act, 1989, carrying prohibited dangerous goods, including firecrackers, explosives, gas cylinders, petrol, kerosene and acid, in passenger trains is strictly forbidden. Violators will face stringent legal action, including imprisonment of up to three years and heavy fines. They will also be held legally responsible for any loss of life, injuries or damage to railway property and fellow passengers resulting from their actions.
As part of its zero-tolerance approach, South Coast Railway has launched special safety drives throughout its jurisdiction. Dedicated teams comprising Railway Protection Force (RPF) personnel, Government Railway Police (GRP) staff and Civil Defence Volunteers have been deployed to conduct surprise inspections and random checks inside trains.
Railway administration directed travelling ticket examiners, coach attendants, train managers and station managers to remain alert and immediately report any suspicious activity or transportation of prohibited materials. Special surveillance is being maintained on parcels and luggage loaded into parcel vans to prevent the concealment and movement of explosives.
Security personnel deployed at railway stations, important railway offices, sidings and goods sheds have also been placed on high alert to detect and prevent the movement of hazardous substances through the railway network. Alongside intensified security checks, SCoR’s security department has launched extensive awareness campaigns to educate passengers and railway users about the dangers of carrying firecrackers and inflammable materials during train journeys. Appealing for public cooperation, railway authorities urged passengers to remain vigilant and act as the eyes and ears of the railway security system. Travellers have been advised to immediately alert railway officials if they notice anyone carrying firecrackers, explosives or suspicious baggage. Passengers can report such incidents by calling the toll-free railway helpline No: 139.
