Visakhapatnam: As per the directions of GVMC Commissioner Ketan Garg, the SHE teams (Sanitation, Health and Environment), constituted to ensure quality, hygienic and safe food for citizens and maintain cleanliness, conducted extensive inspections at hotels, restaurants, fast-food centres and other commercial establishments in various wards in the Gajuwaka zone on Wednesday.

The SHE team, comprising public health officials and staff, carried out inspections from Vantillu Junction to Old Gajuwaka junction, said GVMC Gajuwaka zone assistant medical officer Kiran Kumar.

The team examined cleanliness in kitchens, quality of food items, food stored in refrigerators, availability of twin bins, use of single-use plastic and validity of trade licences at hotels, restaurants and fast-food centres.

During inspections, spoiled and unfit food items stored in refrigerators at some hotels were identified and seized. Action was taken as per rules against establishments that failed to maintain sanitation standards in kitchens, used banned single-use plastic or operated without valid or renewed trade licences.

A total penalty of Rs 45,000 was collected from establishments found violating the prescribed norms. The managements of establishments operating without trade licences were directed to obtain them immediately, while those with expired licences were instructed to renew them without delay.

All commercial establishments were directed to provide separate bins for wet and dry waste and completely discontinue the use of banned single-use plastic.

Kiran Kumar stated that GVMC Commissioner Ketan Garg had specially constituted SHE teams across the city with public health and safety as the primary objective and initiated an action plan for regular inspections. Accordingly, the teams are continuously inspecting hotels, restaurants, fast-food centres and other food outlets across the city.

He emphasised that it is the responsibility of every establishment to provide quality and safe food to consumers while strictly adhering to food safety and sanitation standards. He warned that action would continue against establishments violating the prescribed norms.

Gajuwaka zone public health officials, sanitary supervisors, sanitary inspectors, SHE team members and other staff participated in the inspections.
