Cash-strapped beneficiaries to get houses through contractors

Wanaparthy: “Poor beneficiaries who have been sanctioned Indiramma houses but are unable to take up construction due to financial constraints can now get their houses built through contractors,” Wanaparthy MLA Thudi Megha Reddy said on Friday.

The government has introduced the arrangement to ensure that financial hardship does not prevent eligible families from getting a pucca house. Beneficiaries will have to voluntarily opt for the scheme and enter into an agreement with a contractor. The houses, measuring 418 sq ft, will comprise a hall, bedroom, kitchen, latrine and bathroom and are expected to be completed within three months.

“Nearly 443 beneficiaries in Wanaparthy district have received sanction orders but have not started construction for various reasons,” District Collector Adarsh Surabhi said. In the Wanaparthy constituency, 3,422 beneficiaries have received sanction documents under the first and second phases, of whom 1,040 houses have been completed.

Megha Reddy said the State government had sanctioned 3,500 houses per constituency in the first phase and another 2,000 per constituency in the second phase, with the broader objective of making the State free of huts.

He appealed to beneficiaries not to incur unnecessary debt by spending excessively on house construction. The Collector clarified that opting for contractor-based construction was voluntary, but beneficiaries who neither took up construction through a contractor nor built the house themselves would face cancellation of the sanction.

The MLA also said the government had issued orders to make one-time payments for Indiramma houses sanctioned in the first phase that are currently at different stages of construction.
