Two held for ‘digital arrest’ extortion from gold traders
Warangal: Kesamudram police arrested two cyber criminals accused of posing as police officers and extorting money from gold traders through “digital arrest” threats. Mahabubabad SP Dr Shabarish, IPS, said the accused were Sheikh Irfan (29) of Nidamanuru and Chintalacheruvu Prashanth (26), both from Nalgonda district.
Police said Irfan photographed himself wearing a police uniform and used it as his WhatsApp and Truecaller display picture. He allegedly obtained the number of gold trader Bogogu Venugopal Chari through Google and called him on September 10, claiming to be an SI. Threatening arrest over allegedly purchasing stolen gold, he sent a QR code and allegedly collected Rs 88,026.
Technical evidence, cybercrime portal data and bank transactions helped police trace the duo. They were arrested on September 20. Police said they had collected around Rs 4.20 lakh between August 15 and September 15. Several similar cases were registered against them earlier.
SP Shabarish urged victims of cyber fraud to call 1930 immediately.
