AP govt raises medical students’ stipend by 5-10%

Amaravati: The state government has enhanced the stipends of interns, postgraduate students, super-specialty students, MDS and DNB students in government medical and dental colleges with effect from January 1, 2026.

Under the orders issued by the Health, Medical and Family Welfare Department, the stipend for MBBS and BDS house surgeons has been increased by 10 per cent, while stipends for PG Degree and Diploma, Super-Specialty PG, MDS and DNB students have been enhanced by 5 per cent.

The revision follows a demand raised by the Andhra Pradesh Junior Doctors Association (APJUDA) for enhancement of stipends from January 1, 2026, among other demands concerning medical teachers, senior residents, working hours and basic amenities.

The issue was examined following the Andhra Pradesh High Court's August 25, 2026 order in WP (PIL) No 193 of 2026.

An Expert Committee was constituted to examine the stipend issue and hold discussions with APJUDA. The committee met on August 27 and September 3 and reviewed existing stipend rates, APJUDA's demands, rates prevailing in neighbouring States and the salaries of Assistant Professors in Andhra Pradesh.

The committee had initially recommended a 10 per cent hike for interns and 4 per cent for PG, super-specialty PG, MDS and DNB students from January 1, 2026, followed by a 3 per cent annual increase from January 1, 2027. After examination in consultation with the finance department, the government approved a 5 per cent hike for the latter categories and fixed a higher annual increase of 3.5 per cent from January 1, 2027.

Under the revised rates, the monthly stipend for house surgeons rises from Rs 25,906 to Rs 28,497. PG Degree and MDS/DNB first-year students will receive Rs 63,864, second-year students Rs 64,604 and third-year students Rs 68,005.

For PG Diploma students, the first-year stipend is Rs 63,864 and second-year stipend Rs 64,604. Super-Specialty students will receive Rs 84,525 in the first year, Rs 86,940 in the second year and Rs 89,355 in the third year.

The government said the revision will entail an additional annual financial commitment of approximately Rs 34.08 crore over the existing expenditure on stipends. It has further ordered that the revised rates will receive a 3.5 per cent annual enhancement from January 1, 2027, with the same annual increase to continue thereafter.
