Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Friday announced the launch of the Assam Bamboo Cycle
Guwahati: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Friday announced the launch of the Assam Bamboo Cycle, an initiative aimed at promoting bamboo-based innovation, sustainable mobility and green industries in the state.
In a post on X, Sarma invited cycling enthusiasts to experience the bamboo-crafted bicycle, which will be showcased at the Brahmaputra Riverfront in Guwahati from October 2. “Assam’s bamboo story is ready to roll!” the Chief Minister said, highlighting the role of policy reforms and innovation in expanding opportunities linked to the state’s bamboo economy.
Sarma credited Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s reform recognising bamboo as grass with opening new avenues for livelihoods and green industry in Assam. He said the latest initiative sought to carry forward that vision through a bicycle manufactured using bamboo. “Adarniya Narendra Modi ji’s reform recognising bamboo as grass opened new avenues for livelihoods and green industry in Assam. Today, we take that vision forward with the Assam Bamboo Cycle, a bicycle crafted from bamboo,” Sarma posted.
The Chief Minister called upon cycling enthusiasts to participate in the initiative and explore the potential of bamboo as a material for sustainable products.
The announcement places Assam’s bamboo sector at the intersection of traditional resources, innovation and environmentally conscious manufacturing. Bamboo, widely available across Assam and the Northeast, has applications in handicrafts, furniture, construction and other value-added industries.
The bamboo bicycle initiative also highlights the possibility of developing products that combine local resources with contemporary design and manufacturing approaches. Sarma’s announcement comes amid the state government’s efforts to promote bamboo-based entrepreneurship and expand economic opportunities associated with the natural resource.
The public showcase at the Brahmaputra Riverfront, beginning October 2, is expected to provide cycling enthusiasts and visitors an opportunity to see the bamboo bicycle and learn more about the innovation.
The Chief Minister’s message also linked the initiative to a broader vision of sustainable development, encouraging public participation in efforts to explore environmentally friendly alternatives.
Further details regarding the bicycle’s manufacturing process, commercial availability and production scale were not provided in the post.
