Dhami opens Patanjali Ayurveda Gurukulam

Haridwar: Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami inaugurated Patanjali Ayurveda Gurukulam at Aurangabad in Haridwar on World Ayurveda Day, describing the initiative as an effort to connect India’s traditional knowledge system with modern education.

A key feature of the initiative is a pathway for eligible Sanskrit students to pursue the Bachelor of Ayurvedic Medicine and Surgery (BAMS) programme. Dhami said the Gurukulam would combine academic learning with values, discipline, character-building and practical life skills.

The Chief Minister said Patanjali Ayurveda Gurukulam could become an effective platform for passing India’s ancient knowledge traditions to a new generation.

Swami Ramdev said the initiative would provide Sanskrit and Vedic scholars an opportunity to enter formal Ayurvedic medical education. He said the institution would seek to combine the ancient Ayurveda tradition with modern scientific education and help expand the global reach of Ayurveda.

Acharya Balkrishna said the initiative followed recognition given by the Centre to Sanskrit students for pursuing Ayurvedic medical education. He said the Central Sanskrit University and the National Commission for Indian System of Medicine (NCISM) would play roles in developing the BAMS programme under the traditional Gurukulam system. According to Balkrishna, the Central Sanskrit University will determine the framework and other formalities for the Gurukulam.

Uttarakhand AYUSH Minister Madan Kaushik welcomed the initiative and proposed setting up Patanjali wellness centres in hotels and dharamshalas across Uttarakhand to promote wellness tourism.

Indian Education Board Acting Chairman N.P. Singh said the proposed educational model would combine Ayurveda, medical learning and skill development.
