Four MP sites added to UNESCO tentative list, total reaches 19

Bhopal: Four more historical sites from Madhya Pradesh have been included in UNESCO’s tentative list of World Heritage sites, raising the state’s tally to 19.

The newly added sites are the Bagh Caves in Dhar, Ginnaurgarh Fort in the Ratapani region, the Bateshwar-Padavali-Kakramath temple complex in Morena, and the Udayagiri Caves in Vidisha. Inclusion in the tentative list is the first formal step toward possible inscription on the World Heritage List. Sites on the list undergo detailed evaluation and other procedures before a final decision is taken.

Chief Minister Mohan Yadav congratulated the people of Madhya Pradesh on the development. On his X handle, he said the addition offers an opportunity to further the global recognition of the state’s rich historical heritage and stressed the need for collective efforts to conserve and promote these treasures. Fifteen historical and natural sites from Madhya Pradesh were already on UNESCO’s tentative list. These include Gwalior Fort, Bhojeshwar Mahadev Temple, the rock art sites of the Chambal Valley, Khuni Bhandara, the Gond monuments of Ramnagar, the Dhamnar group, Bhedaghat-Lametaghat, Satpura Tiger Reserve, the historic ensemble of Orchha, and the monuments of Mandu, among others.

The Bagh Caves form a group of nine Buddhist rock-cut caves developed between the 4th and 6th centuries. The murals in Cave No. 4 are especially notable, offering valuable insights into the social life and culture of that period.

Ginnaurgarh Fort, located in the Ratapani area, exemplifies Gond architecture and traditional water management systems. Its natural defences provided by the hilly terrain, along with fortifications and stepwells, are among its key features.

The Bateshwar-Padavali-Kakramath complex in Morena displays the varied architectural styles of temples built between the 8th and 11th centuries.

The Bateshwar temple cluster, the intricate carvings at Padavali, and the distinctive design of Kakramath together make the site historically significant.

The Udayagiri Caves in Vidisha were an important centre of religious and political expression during the Gupta period. The site consists of 20 rock-cut caves, with the celebrated Varaha statue standing out as a major highlight.

The latest additions strengthen Madhya Pradesh’s position as a major repository of India’s cultural and architectural legacy on the global stage.
