Singareni plans 75,500 tonnes daily coal supply to GENCO plants

Kothagudem: The Singareni Collieries Company Limited (SCCL) and Telangana GENCO have chalked out an action plan to ensure uninterrupted supply of coal to thermal power plants in the state amid rising power demand triggered by El Nino conditions.

The plan targets supplying 75,500 tonnes of coal per day to GENCO power stations, officials said after a special coordination meeting held through video conference on Tuesday.

The meeting was chaired by SCCL CMD Dr Buddhi Prakash Jyoti and Telangana GENCO CMD Dr Harish. SCCL area general managers, GENCO chief engineers and senior officials of both organisations participated on Tuesday.

The officials reviewed plant-wise coal requirements, existing supplies, coal quality, availability of railway rakes, loading and unloading arrangements and transportation-related issues.

Under the proposed plan, 56,000 tonnes would be transported by rail through 14 rakes every day, while another 19,500 tonnes would be moved by road.

The meeting reviewed the requirements of individual power stations, including 24,000 tonnes per day for Kothagudem, 4,500 tonnes for Kakatiya, 15,000 tonnes for Bhadradri and 34,000 tonnes for Yadadri.

For Yadadri, officials discussed transporting 8,000 tonnes a day from the Naini coal block in Odisha through two railway rakes and 36,000 tonnes from local Singareni mines through six rakes. SCCL officials said steps were being taken to increase supplies from Naini.

SCCL officials said 15.02 lakh tonnes of coal had been supplied to GENCO power stations through rail and road routes up to September 28 this year. During the corresponding period last September, the supply stood at 11.44 lakh tonnes. The increase was 3.58 lakh tonnes, or about 31 per cent, they said.

GENCO officials said power demand had increased due to dry weather conditions associated with El Nino and stressed the need for additional coal supplies to match power generation requirements.

The two organisations decided that area GMs and power plant chief engineers should coordinate closely to resolve issues relating to coal supply, transportation and receipt of consignments. Daily information exchange through phone and WhatsApp groups would also be maintained, while efforts would be made to expedite rake mobilisation, loading and unloading.

Officials said the joint coordination mechanism was aimed at ensuring uninterrupted power generation in the state through timely and quality coal supplies. They added that this was the first time that a joint coordination review had been conducted involving power plant chief engineers and the GMs of coal-supplying areas.

SCCL directors L.V. Suryanarayana (Operations) and K. Venkateshwarlu (Projects and Planning), GM (Coordination and Marketing) T. Srinivas, GENCO chief engineers and SCCL area general managers attended the meeting.
