J&K Lt Governor flags off Harmukh-Gangbal Yatra from Ganderbal

Srinagar: J&K Lt Governor Manoj Sinha on Friday flagged off the annual Harmukh-Gangbal Yatra from Naranag in Ganderbal district, marking the beginning of the pilgrimage towards the sacred Gangbal Lake in the Harmukh mountain range.

Rajouri-Poonch MP Mian Altaf Ahmad, Kangan MLA Mian Mehr Ali, and senior police and civil administration officials were also present during the flag-off ceremony.

The yatra began from Naranag amid security arrangements put in place by the administration and security agencies for the movement of devotees along the mountainous route leading to Gangbal Lake.

The pilgrimage to Gangbal, situated at the foothills of Mount Harmukh, is an annual religious journey of Kashmiri Pandits and other devotees.

The route from Naranag involves a trek through the higher reaches of the Harmukh mountain range before reaching the lake.

The administration had undertaken preparations for the yatra in advance, with arrangements reviewed by senior officials of the divisional and district administration.

Authorities also focused on security, medical assistance, sanitation, drinking water, and other facilities along the route.

The flag-off by the Lt Governor at Naranag marked the formal commencement of this year’s pilgrimage, with devotees setting out for the sacred lake. Kashmir Pandits worship Gangbal Lake (also called Harmakut Ganga or the Kailash of Kashmir) as a sacred abode of Lord Shiva.

Pilgrims perform rituals like Pind Daan, Shraad, and Vedic Yagna, and immerse ashes of the dead, considering the lake equivalent to the Ganga.

Kashmiri Pandits revived the pilgrimage in 2009 after remaining dormant for over a century. It is organised by the Harmukh Ganga Gangbal Trust (HGGT). Pilgrims undertake a strenuous 15-km mountain trek one-way (approx. 30–36 km round trip) through higher reaches, reaching an altitude of around 14,500 feet above sea level.

The local civil administration, police, and security forces (such as the Rashtriya Rifles and SDRF) provide medical aid, security, and logistical support along the mountainous terrain.
