Kashmiri Man Alleges Assault By Rahul Gandhi Supporters During Delhi Protest; FIR Filed
A Jammu and Kashmir man claimed now the supporters of Congress president Rahul Gandhi assaulted him for raising slogans for Prime Minister Narendra Modi. According to sources, the assault took place during the protest of the INDIA bloc which was held recently in the national capital. Police has filed a First Information Report (FIR) against the unknown persons after this complaint.
The incident happened in Connaught Place area on Thursday, October 8 during opposition protests calling for the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar due to possible irregularities in the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls.
Complainant Fahim Nazir said he went there to protest the charge of “vote theft” made by the Opposition and expressed his support for the Prime Minister.
He was carrying a placard and giving slogans in support of Mr Modi, when someone in the crowd started shouting anti government slogans, said Nazir. The exchange apparently escalated into a confrontation.
Speaking to NDTV, Nazir said that he wanted to discuss the irregularities in the election with Rahul Gandhi and he was waiting for his answers. BJP president Vijay Goel had said in the statement that these issues have not been discussed in Congress' agenda at all during its two wins in the past three elections in 2004 and 2009, but have been raised since the BJP's string of victories since 2014.
In responding to charges of vote rigging, Nazir also spoke of the electoral triumphs of Arvind Kejriwal in Delhi.
Complainant reports Head and Arm injuries
During the confrontation, the supporters of Rahul Gandhi had beaten Nazir, he alleged. He reported that he had been injured to his head and arm and was suffering a severe headache, he said.
The allegations have not been independently established. Delhi Police have lodged a complaint against the unknown individuals and the incident will be probed.
The FIR comes as a new development in the political tensions as a result of the current protests in the national capital.
BJP has accused the Congress workers of an assault
The BJP condemned the alleged attack and alleged Congress workers had targeted the citizen for expressing support to Prime Minister Modi.
Congress workers surrounded and assaulted Nazir after he raised slogans supporting the PM, BJP spokesperson Pradeep Bhandari posted a video of the incident on X.
The attack on citizens and the Congress for undermining democratic values, Bhandari said, adding that it was an attack on the citizens. These are the comments in response to the complainant's allegations.
Opposition to Electoral Roll Revision
Since October 6, the INDIA bloc has been protesting against the Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar over irregularities in the SIR process, and asked him to resign.
Opposition leaders have been criticizing the Election Commission and the BJP for updates in the electoral rolls and the political row has resulted in protests and clashes with police in the capital Delhi.
The police investigation into Nazir's complaint is still on-going and the allegations against the unidentified persons have not been proved.
