PM Modi Confident Of Positive Talks At BRICS Summit, Says Global Welfare Is The Goal

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday said he is confident that the forthcoming BRICS Summit in New Delhi will help in having constructive discussions on global challenges and help bring a smile to the faces of people around the world.

Modi is hoping for constructive discussions at the summit, which will be attended by leaders from several countries, to be held in the national capital. He said that India is looking forward meaningful deliberations on issues affecting the international community.

“Over the next few days, leaders from across the world will gather for the BRICS Summit,” Modi said in a post on X. He added that he was confident the meeting would produce “positive and meaningful discussions” with the objective of global welfare.

The two-day BRICS Summit is being held on Saturday in India, with talks set to take place in various fields such as food and energy security, healthcare, disaster preparation and key supply chains.

New Delhi is also hoping that BRICS will be a significant forum for cooperation between countries in the face of increased geopolitical and economic uncertainties.

The summit arrives at a juncture which the global economy is facing several challenges including the ongoing Russia-Ukraine war, the middle eastern crisis and the disruption in the Strait of Hormuz. The overall geopolitical background is also likely to shape the US trade and tariff policies during the Donald Trump administration.

Leaders of the new expanded BRICS group will meet at the summit.

Among those expected to attend are Chinese President Xi Jinping, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian, Russian President Vladimir Putin, South African President Cyril Ramaphosa, Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto, Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi, Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, Abu Dhabi Crown Prince Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed Ali and Vietnamese Prime Minister Le Minh Hung.

They will help India to have an opportunity to interact with the key global powers on the economic, strategic and geopolitical issues.

Russian President Vladimir Putin came to India on Friday to attend the BRICS Summit and hold bilateral talks with Prime Minister Narendra Modi and to hold the 15th BRICS Summit.

The talks will include topics like trade, investment and cooperation on energy. Putin is going on a high-level visit.

The trip is also the first face-to-face meeting of the BRICS leaders since the outbreak of the Russia-Ukraine war in February 2022.

Modi and Putin will meet on Friday afternoon for bilateral talks. They will be talking about cooperation in defence, energy, technology, pharmaceuticals and people-to-people ties.

Security has been beefed up throughout Delhi in the wake of several foreign leaders' arrival in the capital.

Security measures for the 18th BRICS Summit involve deployment of over 15,000 police personnel, 200 companies of paramilitary forces and over 500 CCTV cameras in Delhi.

Authorities have also put up temporary traffic restrictions and diversions in the roads that are likely to be used by VVIP convoys.

The Delhi Traffic Police has stated that the actions won't lead to a complete blockage of the city, however, there could be some temporary halts to traffic, diversion of roads and other restrictions in place when the visiting dignitaries are moving around the city.

Union minister Salman Khurshid, who attended the event before the summit, said the event was an important chance for India to show leadership in the international community.

The inclusion of leaders from all 11 member countries of the BRICS - Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa, Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa - could help New Delhi in the process of uniting the countries around the table and finding a way to work out differences, Khurshid told ANI news agency.

He said that the grouping may offer the opportunity to counter tensions and contradictions between countries, and to contribute to the building of more benign conditions for the world.
