January 24 is the day when Yamaha’s new street-fighter motorcycle will be launched in India. Speculated to be either a 200cc or 250cc bike, some bit of research points to the upcoming launch being of the Yamaha FZ 250. Now Yamaha has put out a teaser image which shows the aggressive headlight and clip-on handlebars of the quarter-litre machine.

Yamaha’s teaser states that ‘A new breed of riders is coming to town’ and they are unveiling a new chapter. That could be true as the Yamaha FZ 250 sports upside down front forks, front and rear disc brakes, split seats and a headlight which is similar to the Yamaha Xabre. The exhaust is shared with the FZ-S and looks similar.

While engine details remain unavailable, the engine in the spy shots resembles that of the Fazer 250 which is sold in Brazil. That motorcycle is powered by a 249.45cc, single-cylinder mill, generating 20.7 PS of power at 8000 RPM and 20.5 Nm of torque at 6500 RPM. These numbers look far from impressive and thus we expect Yamaha India to boost output if it wants to compete with the KTM Duke 200.

The FZ 250 could be called FZ 25 and is likely to be priced around Rs 1.5 lakh, putting it straight into Bajaj Dominar 400 territory. An option of ABS seems unlikely. Yamaha fans will finally have something to upgrade to from the FZ-S or R15 without having to break the bank for the R3.
