Eluru: Children under the age of 10 years exhibited rare quality of social service when they set up a summer water kiosk. They did so with contributions they collected from people as they had no money to take up the task on their own. All these little kids were studying from Class I to Class V in different schools.
They joined hands to take up the task of providing drinking water to the pedestrians and people feeling thirsty while moving outdoor. The students who were supposed to play during holidays thought of organising a kiosk as a means of social service.
Children belonging to Velampet in Veeravasaram have been supplying chilled butter milk at Gandhorumeda centre to the passers-by when hot sun making people feel thirsty. Immediately after announcement of summer holidays, the kids gathered to do something for society rather than spending time playing and other indoor activities. They build a hut with palm leaves and arranged two earthen pots using sand from Godavari river bed.
The children have been supplying cool water and also butter milk with the contributions from the people of the locality. The effort of the children was well received by the people who have been appreciating the children for achieving a difficult task.
Sadly, officials in the district have not installed such kiosks even though higher ups have been issuing directives to do so during review meetings at different levels. It was difficult for people to identify the locations where the government had set up summer water kiosks.
Setting an inspiration to all such officials, the same mission was achieved by these kids. Introduction of projects in syllabus has changed the mindset of the children who attributing their work to their education. Those who put in efforts in setting up the kiosk are Rohit, Sai, Akhil Pardhu, Swati, Mamata, Chaitanya, Mohan, Uday and Satish.
