​Rajamahendravaram: The Godavari 5K Run was an initiative aimed at promoting running as the primary form of fitness and the event was designed and developed to celebrate the spirit of Rajahmundry, said MP M Muralimohan here on Sunday. He along with MLA Dr Akula Sayannarayana, Mayor Pantam Rajani Sesha Sai, Municipal Commissioner V Vijayarama Raju and former MLC Chaitanya Raju inaugurated Godavari 5K Run at Pushkar Ghat here on Sunday.

Speaking on the occasion, Muralimohan stressed the need for change in the behaviour of people in helping the corporation clean the estimated 200 tonnes of garbage that was piling up in the city on a daily basis. He appealed to people to use double dustbin system to dispose wet and dry waste from their houses.

MLA Akula Satyanarayana said dumper vans would be deployed every day to clear garbage. Mayor Pantam Rajani Sesha Sai said that the event would not only promote health consciousness but would also give a call to ban plastic in the city. Municipal Commissioner V Vijayarama Raju said that the main aim of the programme was to give publicity on harmful effects of using plastic products.

Chairman of GIET College Chaitanya Raju was presented rolling shield on the occasion. A participant V S Prakash Rao stood first in the category of 65-plus.
