​Eluru: West Godavari District Collector K Bhaskar announced that the district would be declared as the open defecation-free district by December-end. He participated as chief guest in the District Water and Sanitation Mission programme held at Nallajerla village on Tuesday.

Speaking on the occasion, the Collector said all the villagers should come forward and take the stoppage of open defecation in the village as a social responsibility. He suggested the elected representatives and voluntary organisations create awareness among the public from the village-level to make the programme a success.

He pointed out that Rs 1,800 crore to Rs 2,000 crore were being spent on medical treatment in the district. Open defecation was one of the main reasons for the spread of epidemics, he said. The Collector said that the Centre and the State government had been sanctioning Rs15,000 to construct individual toilets in houses under Swachh Bharat programme.

During last year, 60,000 toilets were constructed in the district. Another 1.5 lakh toilets have to be constructed in the district, he added. ZP Chairman Mullapudi Bapiraju presided over the meeting. Swachh Bharat Chief Engineer Kishore Kumar, MLAs Pulaparthi Anjaneyulu, Vetukuri Sivaramaraju, Arimilli Radhakrishna and KS Jawahar, Government Whip Chintamaneni Prabhakar, ZP Vice-Chairman Venkataramana, Nallajerla Mandal president Satish, sarpanch Y Srinivas, officials participated in the programme.
