Rajamahendravaram: Students of welfare hostels under the aegis of SFI staged a Maha Dharna in front of the Sub-Collector’s office here on Wednesday demanding a halt to closure of welfare hostels, reopening of closed hostels and schools and enhancement of mess charges to Rs 2,000.

They also demanded increasing cosmetic charges to Rs 500 and a hike in scholarships.Speaking on the occasion, State vice-president of SFI B Raju Lova and district president B Pavan alleged that the State government was depriving students belonging to SC, ST and BCs of right to education by closing welfare hostels and schools.

They said that the government had so far closed 600 hostels and 1,000 schools.Recalling that mess charges were last increased four years back, they demanded enhancement of mess charges to Rs 2,000 in the wake of skyrocketing prices.

They also demanded a hike in scholarships. They asked the government to set up junior and degree colleges in Rajamahendravaram. The SFI activists warned of Maha Dharna in Vijayawada if the government failed to fulfill their demands.
