Vijayawada: Stating that Andhra Pradesh had created history by saving four lakh acres of crops in five days by supplying water in various ways, Chief Minister Nara Chandrababu Naidu on Tuesday directed the officials to speed up measures to ensure supply of water to protect the withering crops in the State.

He said the State had registered 9.7 per cent deficit rainfall this season and stressed the need to take urgent measures to save the standing crops.

In a teleconference with officials across the State, the Chief Minister said drones were being used to study the water levels in the 140 km Galeri- Nagari distributor canal. He suggested all the bore wells be recharged so that the stored water could be used to meet the needs of farmers.

Agriculture and allied sectors recorded a growth rate of 22.7 per cent against the economic growth rate of 12.26 per cent of Andhra Pradesh, said the Chief Minister. He said the digging works of 70,000 farm ponds were completed against the target of 2.72 lakh farm ponds in the State.

The officials told the Chief Minister that 1905 km CC road laying works were completed. In response, Naidu made it clear there would be no compromise on the quality of CC roads constructed in the State. He instructed the officials to take steps to make Andhra Pradesh free from open defecation by 2019.
