The research personnel from these institutions observed that disease in fish and shrimp turned out to be a recurring problem and a cause of concern to all the concerned as diseases such as virus, bacteria, fungi, protozoa and allied problems. 

Kakinada: A one-day workshop cum awareness programme on healthy management of fin fishes and shell fishes was organised at State Institute of Fisheries Technology (SIFT), Kakinada on Wednesday as part of National Surveillance on aquatic animal diseases. The programme was organised under the aegis of National Bureau of Fish Genetic Resources (NBFGR) and Central Institute of Fresh Water Aquaculture (CIFA) in association with SIFT.

The research personnel from these institutions observed that disease in fish and shrimp turned out to be a recurring problem and a cause of concern to all the concerned as diseases such as virus, bacteria, fungi, protozoa and allied problems.

It was obeyed that excess pollution and poor quality of water results in toxic gases causes low dissolved oxygen in ponds which was found to be harmful in fish and shrimp culture. Hence surveillance process is needed to be adopted to denote the structured collection and analysis of data for the purpose of detecting disease and infection in a particular area, the met observed.

All the farmers were asked to adopt good management practices for sustaining disease-free aqua culture in the State.It was noticed that the steps taken by NBFGR in implementing the disease surveillance will cover aquaculture in 14 important States across the country.

The programme was chaired by DD fisheries, East Godavari, S Anjali, Srinivasa Rao, scientist Central Institute of Fisheries Education, Kakinada, P K Shoo, principal investigator scientist, CIFA, Bhubaneswar, P Rammohana Rao, principal investigator and AD of fisheries.

SIFT, T V Bharati FDO, SIFT gave various suggestions and observations for effective surveillance and for controlling diseases. S Krishna Reddy, president, East Godavari chapter of Hatcheries Association inaugurated the workshop by lighting the lamp.
