The State government has embarked upon an action plan for boosting basic infrastructure in 3,852 government schools benefiting 3.45 lakh children in the district at a cost of Rs 4.28 crore, according to sources in the Education department.

The government, as per the plan, has given a proforma asking schools to fill them up featuring 90 points under which infrastructure facilities can be created. Already schools in 18 of the 63 mandals have returned the filled-in proforma to government indicating requirements for creation of infrastructure facilities. The rest of schools in other mandals which had received proforma are yet to return them to government.
According to information received so far only 1,423 schools in the district have compound walls. As many as 1,490 schools do not have compound walls at all while 90 schools have partial compound walls. Dubbed as 'Hybrid Annuity System' the government is planning to improve basic infrastructure in all the government schools.
The government plans to releases 40 per cent of funds initially for Infrastructure Improvement Plan to the contracting agencies which come forward and complete the works in two years beginning from 2017-18 financial year.
The government will reimburse the remaining 60 per cent of funds in a span of five years under the annuity system. Works would be grounded by January 2018.

A survey revealed that only 48 of the 193 schools that are centres for 10th class examination does not have benches to sit even for public examination. Only 87 schools have benches facility for students. It was identified that 775 schools do not have water facility and 751 schools do not have proper buildings. Many of them are in a dilapidated state. The government is hopeful of improving basic facilities in all government schools in a phased manner in two years.
