Rajamahendravaram: Mayor Pantham Rajani Sesha Sai on Saturday underscored the need to protect ancient Andhra Natyam, which is having a history of 2,000 years.
Participating in the inaugural function of a two-day Andhra Natya Sadassu held at Sri Venkateswara Anam Kala Kendram here on Saturday, she said the emperors, kings and zamindars encouraged the dance form and in due course it lost its glory and various dance forms came into existence.
“It is the time to bring awareness among the people on Andhra Natyam,” the Mayor assured to arrange a programme in the proposed Godavari Utsav. The Mayor also assured to take to the notice of Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu about Andhra Natyam and steps be taken to set up finance arts wing at Adikavi Nannaya University.
Senior journalist VSS Krishna Kumar said veteran dance guru late Dr Nataraja Rama Krishna named the dance system as 'Andhra Natyam' after a series of discussions held on Alaya Nrutyam and Agama Nrutyam, which finally came into existence as Andhra Natyam.
The dance form belongs to Andhra and it is the duty of everyone to conserve the dance system. Dance teachers across the state participated in the convention.
Kalapriya Nrutya Kala Kshetram and Rama Krishna Nrutya Kala Kshetram jointly organising the two-day meet under the aegis of Department of Cultural Affairs.
Dance gurus Kala Krishna, Achanta Chandrasekhar, Sappa Durga Prasad, Sarada Ramakrishna, organisers Dr PVB Sanjeeva Rao and many others present.
