Srikakulam: Ban on plastic and polythene covers gained momentum in the district. After conducting Swachh Nagavali programme in the city, the municipal corporation officials banned plastic covers usage. Nagavali river passing from middle of the city was polluted with plastic remains and dump of polythene covers. As a result, river water became contaminated which is prime source for drinking water of Srikakulam city residents.

In this backdrop, the district administration, municipal corporation and Pollution Control Board (PCB) officials organised Swachh Nagavali programme recently. At that time, Commissioner R Sriramulu Naidu announced strict implementation of ban on usage of plastic and polythene covers. As per norms, polythene covers, which are having below 50 microns thickness, shall not be used and it will cause harm to environment.

In the city, officials concerned and representatives of various NGOs have been conducting awareness programmes for the past 15 days on a massive scale. Simultaneously, the municipal officials are conducting regular checkings on all shops and directed the owners not to sale plastic and polythene covers which are below 50 microns thickness.

“Plastic and polythene will cause irreparable loss to environment, health of all human beings, instead of plastic, we can use goods and bags made of cloth and jute”, suggested PCB executive engineer T Sudarsanam.

“At present, we are creating awareness among people and traders on negative impact of plastic and polythene and in future, we will impose penalties on its sales and use”, municipal commissioner R Sriramulu Naidu told The Hans India.

The movement against plastic spread to mandal headquarters and other major villages in the district. At Ponduru mandal headquarters, National Green Core (NGC) members initiated movement against plastic goods and polythene covers.

NGC members, Pujari Hari Prasanna, Chowdari Venugopala Rao distributed covers made of cloth to local traders and customers on Saturday and Sunday. Peoples representatives of local bodies K Sai Kumar, M Govinda Rao motivated local traders on harm of using plastic.
