Rajamahendravaram: The one-day bandh of YSR Congress Party organised with the demand for Special Category Status (SCS) in the district on Tuesday was organised amidst tension but peacefully. The police arrested YSRCP leaders at various places across the district as a pre-cautionary measure and shifted them to nearby police stations.

In some places, heated arguments took place between YSRCP leaders and the police officials for obstructing rallies and dharnas. APSRTC did not operate the buses in the district as YSRCP leaders prevented the movement of buses from the depots from 3 a.m. The RTC buses in Rajamahendravaraam, Kakinada, Ravulapalem, Razole, Amalapuram, Tuni, Eleswaram and Ramachandrapuram depots in the district confined to the depots. All bus stations in the district wore a deserted look due to lack of buses.

Many educational institutions declared holidays, cinema theatres cancelled morning shows, transactions in the banks were stalled and all business establishments including hotels were closed. The attendance in many government offices are also reduced due to lack of bus services. YSRCP leaders in groups monitored the Bandh situation in the district to make it a success. Meanwhile, the police made necessary arrangements to tackle any challenge from the agitators.

In Rajamahendravaram, YSRCP city-coordinator Routhu Suryaprakasa Rao, Greater Rajamahendravaram president Kandula Durgesh, party youth wing state president Jakkampudi Raja, party Floor leader in the Council Medapati Sharmila Reddy; Ponnada Satish Kumar in Mummidivaram, Pinepe Viswaroop and others in Amalapuram were arrested and were shifted to police stations.
