The TMC used a bicycle as their election symbol and used an image of Rajinikanth riding a bicycle from the film 'Annamalali' in thier posters.Rajinikanth is Famoulsy known to have said them,"Even God cannot save Tamil Nadu if (AIADMK) returns to power." The DMK-TMC swept the polls.Rajini's statement was said to have contributed to the rout of Jayalalithaa's party.
Later in 2002,the actor undertook a day-long fast to protest against Karnataka government's decision againt releasing Cauvery River water into Tamil Nadu and announced that he would contribute Rs 1 crore towards a paln to interlink Indian rivers.He even met with Indian Prime Minister Atal Bihari vajpayee and many experts to canvass support for the project in this regard.He denied having any desire to see himself as a "Political Leader.
In 2004,he switched loyalities and pledged his vote for the BJP-AIADMK alliance.Though his earlier stance on Amma remained same,he said the support for the BJP-led NDA alliance was absed on an assertion that the BJP would go all-out for linking all rivers in the country to solve the drinking water crisis.
