A 53-year-old farmer at Seven Hills Hospital in Vishakhapatnam helped save a 63-year-old’s life in the city. The farmer Satyanarayana suffered a road accident on April 26 and was undergoing treatment where he was declared brain dead on April 27.

“The Andhra Pradesh unit of Jeevandan informed us about the availability of a cadaver liver and immediately a team of doctors from Global Hospitals went to Seven Hills Hospital and started the retrieval of the organ,” Dr Hirendranath, VP, Medical Services & Operations, Global Hospitals, said. The organ was airlifted to the city.

“Once the organ was recovered, the Vishakhapatnam Police Department created a green corridor for the organ to be transported to the airport in the quickest time possible and with the help of the able staff from Indigo Airlines we were able to get the organ to Hyderabad quickly,” Dr Hirendranath said.

After touchdown at the Hyderabad International Airport, the airline staff immediately offloaded the organ into the waiting ambulance and with the help of the green corridor created by the Hyderabad Police the organ was able to reach the hospital in 20 minutes.

“The team of doctors lead by Dr Tom Cherian, chief of surgery and head, department of liver and pancreatic surgery and transplantation and Dr Balbir Singh, senior liver transplant surgeon at Global Hospitals successfully transplanted the organ after an eight-hour surgery to a 63-year-old retired engineer from Hyderabad,” he said. Satyanarayana’s kidneys were also donated. One kidney was used for a patient in Care Hospital, Vishakhapatnam and the other to a patient in Seven Hills Hospital.
