Hyderabad: Close on the heels of the thumping majority in the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) elections, a visibly overwhelmed IT Minister K T Rama Rao vowed to make Hyderabad a slum-free city and said the State government would construct double-bedroom houses for families of Hamali Basthi in Secunderabad in six months. “Our aim is to construct one lakh houses for the poor in the city,” he added.

Taking a directive from Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao, the IT Minister toured the locality at Padmarao Nagar in Secunderabad area along with Minister Talasani Srinivas Yadav on Saturday. Interacting with local people on the occasion, Rama Rao said, “With the people giving us mandate in the civic body elections, we came here to ascertain your problems and address them at the earliest.

After the GHMC poll results, K Chandrashekar Rao asked us to meet you personally to find out your problems,” Rama Rao said. The State government would construct two bed-room houses for the poor dwellers in the Hamali Basti in six months, he said. “Our ultimate aim is to make Hyderabad a slum-free city and provide housing facility for one lakh poor people in the city. Some 800 families of Hamali Basthi will get houses in six months on the lines of IDH Colony,” he added.

During the visit, the two Ministers interacted with the people. Several women were seen urging the Ministers to provide permanent shelter as they were living in make-shift houses and huts that were in pathetic condition.

Responding to their pleas, the IT Minister inspected the houses that are in pitiable condition in which the poor hamali families are residing. He promised to provide them houses on par with IDH Colony in six months. Rama Rao also thanked the people for giving a thumping majority to the ruling party, which, the Minister said, would keep its manifesto promises and make the city the most sought after destination with global standards.
