It was a unique homecoming of sorts for 26-year-old K Meena, who returned to the hospital that treated her during her childhood.
Meena, who was treated for ‘Blue Baby Syndrome’ at the age of 12 years at Innova Hospitals, returned to the same for delivering her baby there.
In addition, Dr KS Murthy, Chief Cardiac Surgeon, who had operated on Meena all those years ago, returned to perform the delivery of her baby girl.
“Her case busts the myth of children born with heart defects can't lead a normal life and are destined to die prematurely. Both the mother and the baby are doing well and are due for discharge,” said Dr Murthy.
Meena was evaluated by Dr Murthy and his team, who advised supervised institutional delivery, which was conducted on October 26.
The baby weighed 2.6kg. An evaluation of the baby found her to be normal without any congenital abnormality.
According to the doctor, “Most birth defects in the heart are correctable and the patient can lead a normal or near normal life following surgical correction.
Media can play a critical role in building awareness in the public about congenital heart disease and it being fully treatable.”
“The advantages of early correction,” said Dr Murthy, “are it prevents repeated hospitalisation due to chest infections, heart failure leading to other complications can be avoided.”
The team at Innova Hospitals involved with Dr Murthy in the delivery of the baby included Dr Ekambari, Gynaecologist; Dr Raghavendra, Anaesthetist; Dr Lakshmi, Paediatrician; Dr Ram Mohan, Cardiologist and Dr Samuel, Cardiac Surgeon.
