The GWMC Mayor, N Narender, formally inaugurated the idol immersion at Chinna Waddepally tank with special prayers. The city Commissioner of Police G Sudheer Babu commenced idol immersion at Padmakshi gundam in Hanamkonda by immersing a clay idol.
All the streets and roads of tri-cities of Warangal-Hanamkonda-Kazipet came alive with processions of Ganesh idols being taken for immersion after the nine-day Ganesh Navaratri celebrations. Devotees raising slogans hailing Lord Ganesh and dancing to drum beats took part in the processions.
Besides huge idols installed by Ganesh Mandalis, individuals carrying the idols installed at their homes have also joined the processions. Some enthusiasts dressed up like deities added colour to the processions.
The immersion of idols has taken place at Bandam Cheruvu, Padmakshi Gundam, Rangam Cheruvu, Bestham Cheruvu, Deshaipet Cheruvu, Siddeshwara Gundam, Kota Cheruvu, Katta Mallanna Cheruvu, Chinna Waddepally tank and Hasanparthy Pedda Cheruvu in the city.
16 cranes were being used for the immersion of idols and flood lights were set up all the tanks for the convenience of the devotees. Nearly 500 municipal personnel were deployed at different tanks, Mayor Narender told the presspersons on the day.
Commissioner of Police Sudheer Babu said nearly 6,000 idols installed under the city limits would be brought for immersion. The services of 300 NCC and NSS volunteers were being used besides 2,000 police personnel to ensure smooth and incident free immersion and it was being monitored with the help of CCTVs. A control room was set up at RDO office to respond to any issues during the immersion.
Ganesh idols on specially designed vehicles slowly moved towards their assigned locations. The immersion was expected to go on post mid-night hours in view of large number of idols in the city.
Organisations like Vishwa Hindu Parishad distributed prasadam and drinking water to devotees.
Meanwhile, a 42-year-old man called R Malla Reddy died during immersion after he drowned in a tank at Peddapendyala village in Dharmasagar mandal of Warangal urban district.
