Hawkers Protest at GHMC, National Hawkers’ Federation of Andhra Pradesh. Inayat Ali Baquri, general secretary, NHF AP said, “The GHMC had announced that it has constituted a TVC as per the verdict.
The National Hawkers’ Federation of Andhra Pradesh (NHFAP) conducted a gherao against Jayaraj Kennedy, additional commissioner, Urban Community Development. They conducted the gherao to demand their vending licenses and other facilities as notified in GO 481, for the protection of vendors and their livelihoods. Under the same GO, it was also mentioned that the ULB (Urban Local Body) must constitute a TVC (Town Vending Committee) which must consist of atleast 40% of vendors before December 5.
Inayat Ali Baquri, general secretary, NHF AP said, “The GHMC had announced that it has constituted a TVC as per the verdict. We ourselves have conducted the survey and we have come to the GHMC with all the documents that they have requested. But, we are yet to receive the licenses. Another point is that a temporary TVC has been constituted which will cease to exist post March 2014.”
Currently in the city, there are 1.4 lakh hawkers and street-vendors. This number excludes those who take part in weekly markets. Inayat Ali said, “We want the TVC to constitute hawkers and vendors, not unions or other chapters, which have a political allegiance.”
After the gherao, Somesh Kumar, Commissioner, GHMC interacted with the hawkers and vendors and noted that if the GO was executed to the word without any problems, the city would wear a more orderly look as it would create space for commuters and pedestrians and also given them a healthy business atmosphere without the fear of eviction or harassment.
