RJD wins bypoll Patna (Agencies): Emboldened by the emphatic win in the Maharajganj byelection, Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) chief Lalu Prasad on Wednesday dubbed the win of his party's candidate Prabhunath Singh in the bypoll as " a victory of the people of Bihar as well as a mandate reflecting the rejection of the faulty policies and misrule of the Nitish Kumar government". "People of Bihar have rejected Nitish and it is a big setback for him. This is not a defeat of JD(U) candidate PK Shahi but that of the chief minister, who had literally begged the people for the seat as a reward for his development work. Now, Nitish 's downfall is imminent," said a beaming Prasad, while talking to newsmen in Patna.

The RJD chief also emphasized, that the bypoll result should not be seen in isolation as a victory of the RJD in Maharajganj, but in the perspective of the growing unpopularity of the chief minister. He claimed, the people of Bihar are fed up with the misrule in the state and the complete collapse in key sectors like education, power, besides law and order. In the same vein, Lalu said the Maharajganj bypoll result with a huge margin of over 1 lakh votes had also broken the myth, that upper castes were not aligned with the RJD. He observed that even in Goriakothi segment, where Bhumihars dominate, the Brahmarishi caste voted for the RJD comprehensively, even to the extent of leaving out its own casteman, PK Shahi. "People of all castes from upper sections and backward classes including mahadalit, dalits , EBCs, all made up their mind to vote for the RJD and reject the JD(U)-BJP coalition.
TMC wins Howrah LS bypoll
Kolkata (Agencies): In a moral boost ahead of state panchayat elections next month, the Trinamool Congress (TMC) on its own managed to retain the Howrah Lok Sabha seat with a comfortable margin, dispelling the negativity surrounding the Mamata Banerjee-government post Saradha scam. TMC candidate and former international footballer Prasun Banerjee defeated his nearest CPI-M rival Sridip Bhattacharjee by a margin of over 27,000 votes While TMC and CPI-M grabbed 4,26,273 and 3,99,258 votes respectively, Congress candidate became a distant third securing 96,727 votes. In 2009, TMC had an alliance with the Congress and won the seat by a margin of more than 37,000 votes. However, TMC-Congress had a lead of over 1,80,000 votes in 2011 assembly election in the seven seats that comes under Howrah Lok Sabha constituency.
