On January 9, the arrest of Devyani Khobragade in New York caused a major diplomatic rift between India and US.
On January 29, Nido Taniam (20), a student from Arunachal Pradesh died after he was beaten up by locals in Lajpat Nagar, New Delhi. This triggered protests all over the country and highlighted the discrimination faced by people of northeastern origin in other parts of the country.
On February 28, Subrata Roy, chairman of Sahara India, was arrested on orders of the Supreme Court when his company failed to return money to investors. He is still behind bars.
On June 2, the country saw the birth of Telangana, the 29th state of the union.
