The killing of 20 sandalwood cutters in the Seshachalam forests by police and forest officials is fast becoming an albatross around the neck of AP Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu. The killings have led to large-scale protests in Tamil Nadu.

The HRC has taken cognisance of the matter and started inquiring into it. The AP High Court has also questioned why the police have not registered a case of murder. Human rights activists are justifiably agitated over the mass killing under the guise of encounter. Quite un-chracterstically, Naidu is tight-lipped over the matter while his ministers are supporting the police action. Considering that the State government is supporting the police action, any inquiry under the State authority would only be futile. The police seem to have exhibited excellent shooting skills in darkness in knocking down 20 people without any significant injury on their side.
