Hyderabad to host Sr TT Nationals

Hyderabad: The country’s crème de la crème will be seen action, including formidable achievers like Achanta Sharat Kamal, Sathiyan, Soumyajeet Ghosh, Anthony Amal Raj, Mouma Das and Ankita Das when the 77th Inter-State and Senior National Table Tennis Championship begins at the Kotla Vijayabhaskar Reddy Indoor Stadium here on January 5.

A Narasimha Reddy and P Prakash Raju, President and Secretary of Telangana State Table Tennis Association told media that Hyderabad will be hosting the nation’s premier senior championship for the first time in almost three decades. The last one, incidentally the golden jubilee edition, was held in 1988. They said that a total prize-money of Rs 8.5 lakh is up for grabs in the six-day event.

Over 400 players will be participating in the season-opener, which also is significant as it is also the Olympic year. Apart from the Inter-State championship, competitions will be held in men and women singles and doubles and mixed doubles. Chairman of the Organising Committee and Union Minister Bandaru Dattatreya called upon schools and educational institutions to encourage students to develop a liking for sports. SM Sultan, Vice-President, Table Tennis Federation of India also spoke on the occasion.
