Khammam: District Judge and Legal Services Authority Chairman Justice I Ramesh on Sunday said the objective of the legal services authority was to provide free services to people who were below poverty line. The District Judge was the chief guest at a meeting organised at Nyaya Seva Sadan here on the occasion of Legal Services Day. Speaking on the occasion, he stressed the need for creating awareness on legal services among people residing in urban and rural areas. Apart from discharging their duties, advocates should educate people on legal services.

Efforts should be made to ensure that people keep faith in the legal system. Free legal services should reach those people who were lagging behind economically and socially. Mr. Justice I Ramesh pointed out that the legal services authority was taking measures to settle cases which were pending in different courts. He called upon the advocates to provide adequate publicity to the National Lok Adalat which will be conducted on December 6.

He said the Khammam district had secured second place in united Andhra Pradesh in resolving cases through Legal Services Authority. He wished that in a separate Telangana State, the district should stand first in resolving the cases. District Legal Services Authority secretary P Kasi Visweswara Rao said as the number of courts were less, resolving of cases was taking time.

He said the Indian Constitution provided equal opportunities to everybody in deriving benefit from the legal system.
Legal Services Authority was set up in the nation on November 9, 1995, to provide immediate justice to people. He said the district legal services authority was focusing on providing immediate justice to the downtrodden and weaker sections. Kasi Visweswara Rao said 290 Lok Adalats were conducted last year and 5,200 cases were resolved.

Under Motor Vehicles Act, 560 cases were settled. Insurance companies paid a compensation of Rs 11.78 crore to the victims. He said 102 cases related to excise department and 1559 cases related to the electricity department were also settled.

District Bar Association President Y Srinivasa Rao, ICDA Project Director Sukhajeevan Babu, Advocates V Narendra, Swaroop and Anganwadi workers were among those present.
