Hyderabad: Taken aback by the attempted kidnap of Vice Chairman of Aurobindo Pharma near KBR Park in the posh Banjara Hills area in which the assailant used an AK 47 rifle, the city police chief M Mahender Reddy on Wednesday constituted special teams to probe the role of suspended Greyhounds personnel in the attack. The weapon belonged to the Greyhounds, an elite police force set up to tackle Maoists menace in united AP.
A police officer inspects the bullet marks on the car of Arabindo Pharma vice-president Nityananda Reddy who was attacked by an unidentified assailant at KBR Park in Banjara Hills in Hyderabad on Wednesday.
Mahender Reddy, who visited the scene, said the rifle was missing since December last year from a commando of Greyhounds.

This is the second case of an AK-47 going missing in Telugu states. In the last year's floods, two self-loading rifles and an AK-47 were swept away while the Greyhounds personnel were crossing a river in Venkatapuram village in Khammam district.

In July 2013, an AK-47 went missing. It was believed that the gun found its way to the hands of Maoist ultras that targeted politicians.

The police have taken the incident seriously as the same AK-47 was used by the assailant. The police are probing the incident from all angles including the possibility of involvement of a Maoist or a former Maoist. The motive of the attacker is also still not clear. The investigating officials are gathering information from Nityananda Reddy and his brother and also analysing footages from CCTV cameras installed at the nearby traffic signal and at the office of Telugu Desam Party (TDP) to identify the attacker.

The incident sent panic among VIPs who throng the famous park for their daily morning walk. Politicians, bureaucrats, businessmen, film actors and other celebrities frequent the park.

The residences of Telangana and Andhra Pradesh Chief Ministers, headquarters of TDP and Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) and residence of several VIPs are located in Banjara Hills and Jubliee Hills surrounding the park.
