In a complaint lodged before City Police Commissioner, the party says the duo misused Mecca Masjib for political propaganda

Hyderabad: Majlis Bachao Tahreek (MBT) on Tuesday lodged a complaint before City Police Commissioner M Mahender Reddy seeking the arrest of AIMIM president Asaduddin Owaisi, noted journalist Shekhar Gupta and others for misusing Mecca Masjid for political purpose.

An interview of Asaduddin by Shekhar Gupta, which was filmed on the premises of the famed Mecca Masjid, was aired in a private television channel on November 21 and later uploaded on YouTube. MBT leader and Azampura corporator Ajmathullah Khan said the interview violated the provisions of the Religious Institutions (Prevention of Misuse) Act, 1988. “The Act clearly defines political activity as, any activity promoting or propagating the aims or objects of a political party or any cause, issue or question of a political nature. Owaisi’s interview was all about politics, his party MIM’s role in forthcoming elections in New Delhi, Uttar Pradesh and West Bengal and other issues related to politics of the country,” he alleged. “The Mecca Masjid is maintained by the Minorities Welfare Department of Telangana government. It is not clear whether the channel took prior permission from the department to film the interview. In that case, the officials of Minorities Welfare Department headed by the Principal Secretary, and the Mecca Masjid staff have violated the law. The Religious Institutions (Prevention of Misuse) Act, 1988, clearly says no religious institution or manager thereof shall use or allow the use of any premises belonging to, or under the control of, the institution for the promotion or propagation of any political activity,” the MBT leader said. “A case should also be booked against the officials of Minorities Welfare Department for permitting or remaining silent on the misuse of a religious place. In case prior permission was taken, then it was illegal. If not, then by not alerting police about the misuse of Mecca Masjid, the officials supported a crime,” he demanded.

The MBT leader said that cases should also be booked under Section 295(A) (hurting religious sentiments) for ‘misusing Mecca Masjid’ and Section 141 (unlawful assembly) for shooting the interview.
