Khammam: The CPM on Tuesday demanded that the State government declare 32 mandals in Khammam district drought-affected.
Addressing the district committee meeting here, CPM district secretary Pothineni Sudarshan Rao said a major part of the district was reeling under drought conditions and the farmers were in dire need of government’s relief.
“Farmers’ hopes of a good Rabi vanished after a disappointing Kharif season due to prevailing drought conditions in the region,” Rao said.
He demanded the government to convene an all-party meeting, along with irrigation experts, to chalk out measures to address the water crisis looming large over the region.
Referring to crop loan waiver, the CPM leader urged the government to extend the date for receiving applications from farmers. He criticised the government for not initiating any welfare programmes in spite of drought conditions prevailing in 32 mandals in the district.
Rao demanded the TRS government to issue employment notifications, besides regularising the contract staff, in accordance with its poll promises. He also demanded the government to save the crops under the ayacut of Zone-2 of Nagarjunasagar Project (NSP) left canal.
Senior leader Nunna Nageswara Rao, Kasani Ailaiah, Yerra Srinkanth, Ponnam Venkateswara Rao, A J Ramesh, A Kanakaiah, K Venkateswara Rao, Lingala Kamal Raj and B Lenin were present at the
meeting.
Meanwhile, the NSP authorities on Tuesday released water to its Zone-2 ayacut from Palair Balancing Reservoir. Officials stopped release of water last week due to insufficient water level in the reservoir. As the water level increased to 17 feet due to copious inflow, the NSP officials released 3,500 cusecs to Zone-2.
