Salaries hiked by 47%; other area workers unrelenting

Hyderabad: Outsourcing workers of GHMC on Friday called off their 12-day-old strike following the announcement of the Government to hike their salaries by 47 per cent but the strike in all other municipalities in the State would continue till the government agrees to hike their salaries as well, according to workers JAC.


GHMC workers JAC representatives told media persons here on Friday that the workers would resume duty from Saturday. Earlier, during day the left parties and the workers JAC along with other political parties like the Congress and TDP observed a State bandh which passed off peacefully.

The municipal JAC consisting of seven unions held a meeting at Indira Park in the evening to review the situation and decided to call off the strike under GHMC limits. The seven unions which participated in the meeting were CITU, FTU, BMS, HMS, IFTU, and AITUC. They said the decision to call off the strike here was taken following a written assurance from Chief Minsiter’s office that the Government would hike their salaries by 47.05 per cent.


They also thanked all the parties for extending their support. The decision to give 47.05 per cent hike would result in an annual burden of Rs.240 crore on the civic body according to officials. The GHMC has 24,000 workers and 3,000 skilled workers who keep the city clean.

A total of 42,000 workers from all municipalities and municipal corporations in the State are participating in the strike. GHMC officials said that they would take the work of garbage clearance on a war footing and would ensure that the city turns clean in the shortest possible time.
