Hyderabad: Minister for Information Technology K Taraka Rama Rao on Saturday strongly defended the shutting down of website for giving information on Government Orders (GOs). Intervening during the discussion on Motion of Thanks on Governor's Address in Legislative Council on Saturday, the Minister said the website was taken offline due to some “professional blackmailers.”

He said some individuals had misused the information extracted from GOs and were going to courts. The State government was ensuring total transparency in its functioning, he asserted. KTR promised that information would be provided to anyone under Right to Information Act. He, however, said shutting down the website would not come under the purview of RTI Act, he said

Earlier , the Leader of Opposition in Legislative Council Mohammed Ali Shabbir alleged that the closing down of the website would amount to violation of Right to Information Act. He held that the government which made tall claims about transparency was in fact adopting the policy of maintaining secrecy.

He said the government should not adopt the policy of secrecy just because Congress was taking up the issue to the courts. “This is nothing but denying the people their right to information,” he said.
