Hyderabad: Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board managing director M Dana Kishore held a review meeting at Environmental Protection Training & Research Institute at Gachibowli and instructed officials to monitor the water contamination levels on regular basis.
He claimed that HMWS&SB has been proactive in testing the water samples and the water supplied by the HMWS&SB is monitored by internal and external agencies that check the water portability in the GHMC limits, without waiting for any complaints.
He said that there is a strong monitoring system that is functioning to monitor the quality of water right from the source to the consumer point. The Water Board said that about 1500 samples are examined by the internal quality wing and 2500 samples are being tested for residual chlorine by the Linemen of O&M Divisions.
And further 1000 samples are being tested for RC by the external agencies like Institute of Preventive Medicine, Institute of Health Systems and Self Help Group Volunteers, he said.
Dana Kishore said that there are 217 chlorination plants installed at WTPs, balancing reservoirs and service reservoirs for maintaining the sufficient levels of residual chlorine in the distribution system of HMWS&SB.
Dana Kishore said that out of above tested samples about 0.01 per cent are found to be with absence of residual chlorine due to various reasons such as power failure, old pipe line network, insanitary conditions etc., the same are being rectified by the officers concerned with in a short period and necessary residual chlorine is maintained.
He said that the same area will be monitored by Quality Assurance and Testing Wing for chlorine presence in the next visit. More than 100 samples are being collected for bacteriological analysis throughout the city for further investigation in residual chlorine absence places and other places also.
The Water Board MD said that as per the latest analysis report, none of the drinking water sources contain any toxic or heavy metals nor pesticide residues and found to be below detectable limits (BDL).
He said therefore, there is no possibility of heavy metals in the water supplied to the public as the heavy metals are not found in any of the sources.
During routine water quality monitoring by internal and external agencies, if any contaminated water is noticed, on war footing the pollution rectification is being taken up within 48 hours by the concerned managers (engineering), thereby ensuring that no faecal coliform bacteria or E-coli are present.
