Adilabad: The displaced persons of Sripada Yellampalli irrigation project are yet to get compensation even after its completion long ago.
Nine villages, including Namora, Chandanpur, Rapalli, Karnamamidi, Kondapalli, Harthanpalli, Gullakota and Suraram villages, were submerged under the project.

The maximum storage capacity of Yellampalli project is 20 tmc. Many surrounding villages get inundated whenever the water level in the project rises, disrupting normal life.

The project oustees are making rounds of revenue offices seeking payment of compensation for the land and other property acquired from them for the irrigation project.

The affected villagers alleged that the State government failed to lay emphasis on rehabilitation of the Yellampalli project displaced persons.

It was also alleged that large scale irregularities took place in assessment of the value of the land and other property.

Some local leaders and former sarpanches cornered the compensation at the expense of genuine oustees using their political influence, they said.

About 70 people were displaced in Gullakota village. But they are yet to get compensation. Speaking to The Hans India, the wife of Banaiah, who lost his house and 2 kuntas of land, said her husband suffered paralysis stroke after making rounds of the mandal revenue office.

She became an agricultural labourer to run the family. She said the revenue officials were indifferent to her repeated pleas for payment of compensation.

Another old woman, Shankaramma said her name did not figure in the list of the project oustees and she was denied compensation.

Students were also among the aggrieved lot as proper amenities were not created in the upper primary school built as part of the rehabilitation project for the Yellampalli oustees.

As a result, classes are still being held in the old school building at Gullakota though water enters its premises causing severe hardships to students.

Gullakota sarpanch Chandraiah said the revenue officials should ensure that all the genuine oustees get adequate compensation.

When contacted, Special Collector Prabhakara Rao said though emphasis was laid on rehabilitation of the displaced, some of them did not get compensation.

Steps would be taken to ensure that all the genuine project oustees get compensation at the earliest, he added.
